The same bike, built for riders who prefer a crossbar. The Bighorn S is the step-over version of our best-selling all-rounder — identical running gear, different frame. If you are taller, ride harder, or simply grew up on a traditional diamond frame, this is the Bighorn for you.
The top tube frame is stiffer than the low step, which you notice when you are putting power down or carrying weight on the rack. It also sits you in a slightly more forward, purposeful riding position — less upright cruiser, more capable hybrid. Riders coming off a road or mountain bike tend to feel at home on it immediately.
Underneath, it is the same proven package. The Ananda M100 mid-drive delivers 300W and 120N·m of torque, which is what gets you up a steep pinch without dropping to walking pace. The 720Wh battery uses Samsung 21700 cells and is large enough that range stops being something you plan around — one of our customers took a Bighorn 700km through the Southland and Otago trails and was still seeing 80km of real-world range per charge.
The S gets a Shimano Deore 10-speed Linkglide drivetrain, a step up from the Cues groupset on the low step model. Linkglide is engineered specifically for the torque an e-bike puts through a chain, so it holds up where a standard drivetrain wears out. Tektro hydraulic discs on 180mm rotors handle the stopping, and a Suntour XCM34 fork with lockout takes the buzz out of gravel.
Everything you need is fitted from new: mudguards, rear rack, front and rear lights, and a colour display with a USB port.
Mechanically the LS and the S are near-identical, so it comes down to the frame. Choose the LS if you want the easiest possible mount and dismount, ride in work clothes, or have any hip or mobility considerations. Choose the S if you are taller, want the stiffer frame, or just prefer the look of a crossbar. Both come in at the same price.
A 4G SIM module is built in, paired to the Wattwheels app: real-time GPS location, geo-fencing alerts if the bike moves without you, remote lighting and assistance control, remote diagnostics, and the ability to report it stolen — which shuts the bike down.
The app subscription is included for the first year and renews at $59.95 per year after that. It is entirely optional — the bike rides normally without it. Tracking functions require 4G coverage, and we recommend removing the battery if the bike will sit unused for more than a week or two.
At 300W the Bighorn S V5 sits inside the WorkRide power limit, so it can be purchased through the scheme if your employer is signed up. Talk to us about how that works.
